Bodycote International, the metals processing group, yesterday launched an online laboratory data system.

The group said that its new "Gold" system would allow clients to have results from tests on their materials processed straight into their production databases.

Under the Bodycote system, the Internet is used to deliver testing instructions from clients straight to the appropriate laboratory.

That information is used to pre-programme laboratory computer systems, so that when samples arrive testing can start immediately.

The results can then be fed straight back to the client.Bodycote said the system allowed products to be certified and released in the shortest possible time.

"The manufacturing cycle is reduced, costs are cut and profits increase," it said.

The group hopes the development will encourage more companies to outsource their laboratory operations.

David Shipley, sales director for Bodycote's materials testing arm, said the service would allow clients to save time and money - and give them a competitive advantage.

"In common with other successful e-business applications, Gold shrinks the geographical barriers - in this case between the manufacturers and the laboratory," said Mr. Shipley.

The system, which has cost Bodycote about £250,000 to date with at least another £250,000 earmarked to continue development - is being gradually introduced across the group's client base.

Mr. Shipley said take-up was quicker in the US where electronic commerce was more familiar to customers.Shares in Bodycote rose 6p to 405p
