Business Discovery

The business discovery stage is targeted at operational business units. The goal is to extend the education phase by defining the business components, the interaction between the various departments or business operations within the company, and also to identify interdependencies.

Business discovery diagram

This business analysis shows how each division or section currently contributes and what, if any, changes are required for rationalisation and improvement. The business discovery process sets the agenda and timescale for the implementation phase. In addition a full business structure analysis is conducted to ensure all operational and technical integration issues are understood.

The business discovery stage includes:

Mapping the current business model – entity relationship and process mapping
Understanding and definition of expectations
Quantification of business interdependencies
Formulation of the business framework
Identification of potential 'quick wins' which could create short-term return on investment or increase business advantage in other ways
Review of existing supporting IT infrastructure

It is always important in measuring success to be clear where you started from. The business framework process provides a visualisation of your current business model, the strengths and assets available and their potential capability. Another framework is then created which represents the target model. The route between the two is the transformation road map, a three-dimensional graphic representation which gives greater depth to, and understanding of, the business disciplines involved in the earlier visualisations.
